E.K. Buckley: Artist Statement
I relate better to a grotesque figure. I find more dignity in the human form with the violence of flaws and disfigurement. I hope to finish a hagiography series inspired by one of my earliest influences. I was drawn to the illustrated saints and their stories. Especially the look of rapture juxtaposed with a chest full of arrows with blood dripping. One that stood out was St. Harold, who, according to the illustration, was grilled to death over coals, and, according to the story, had been cannonized in part for his courage to tell funny jokes while he was burned to death. I'm working on a series of vulgar saints for my contemporary hagiography.
